The 37th Infantry (Conqueror) Battalion, 6th Infantry (K) Division, Philippine Army through the leadership of LTC LEROY S DAANTON INF (GSC) PA conducts a Youth Leadership Summit 2014 with a theme “KABATAAN: Katuwang sa Pagkamit ng Kapayapaan”. The program aims to promote character based leadership inculcating the values formation, leadership, awareness against drug addiction, human rights, civic duty and peace building skills for the youth participants.
The 5-days summit was held last 09-13 August 2014 with its opening at the Old Capitol, Brgy Simuay, Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao with COL EARL D BALIAO JR as the Guest of Honor and Speaker and its closing ceremony at the 603rd Bde Headquarters with COL ARNEL B DELA VEGA as the Guest of Honor and Speaker. The summit composed of sixty (60) participants coming from the six municipalities of the units AO namely: Barira with twelve (12) participants; Buldon with ten (10) participants; Matanog with nine (9) participants; Parang with ten (10) participants; Sultan Kudarat with ten (10) participants and; Sultan Mastura with nine (9) participants are all gathered in one venue to establish unity and create young leaders.
The summit aims to develop the youth to become responsible individuals, empower them to be an advocates and conduits of peace and development, inculcate Culture of Peace, respect other faith and live in harmony with others and to identify youth sector issues, problems and recommend possible plan of action that shall alleviate the living condition and raise the dignity of youths in the society.
Among the activities conducted in the summit are various team building activities which brings the participants closer to each other and enhance their leadership skills; lectures to proliferate their awareness especially on human rights, illegal drugs and IPSP Bayanihan. The lakbay-aral is the activity most appreciated by the participants for they have learned more about military life, from the tour of facilities and static displays at 6ID, trying the obstacle course and conquer their fear of heights in rappelling at 6DTS and even fired a 105mm howitzer at 6FAB was some of the memories the participants would never forget. The summit also have several competitive activities to test the youth participants’ skills in facing different challenges together with their group.
The 5-days Youth Leadership Summit are now make the participants more articulate in pursuing peace advocacy and come up with an action plan on how the youth to become a partner in pursuing just and lasting peace in Mindanao.
The success of this activity was realized through the support provided by the local government officials of the municipality of Barira, Buldon, Matanog, Parang, Sultan Kudarat, Sultan Mastura and also through the spirit of volunteerism of the civilian partners as the YLS 2014 TWG and facilitators headed by Ms Marlyn Sanchez. This does not only mean financial and material support but also by advocating strong positive values to the young leaders and becoming true models for them.
